Update: The store is back up and running now. The rest of the article continues as before.
Anyone wanting to buy an iPhone 4S in tribute to Steve Jobs will have trouble this morning, as the Apple Store is down. Users simply get a message that reads ‘Service unavailable’.
It seems there’s some problem with Apple’s servers and whatever it is, it seems to be global. Usually, when Apple take the store down for a reason, there’s a message explaining this. So the simple ‘Service unavailable’ message suggests this downtime wasn’t planned.
Apple so far hasn’t responded to questions about the downtime but is probably working pretty hard behind the scenes to get things up and running. Even the great Apple can have website problems now and then.

Phew, I thought it was just me.
Posted by Brien | October 7, 2011, 7:22 amA 1.1 error could mean anything, but it’s definitely not planned. If you’re taking your website down for any kind of maintenance, you put up a message. Maybe Steve Jobs forget to let anyone know the passwords before he kicked the bucket.
