Marv Davidov, one of America’s most high-profile peace activists since the 60s, has died at the age of 80. He is reported to have been suffering from health problems for a while.

Remarking that it was seen by many in America as a subversive act to stand up for moral beliefs, Marv Davidov began protesting in the early 60s when he headed for the Deep South to join marches against segregation. He later added anti-war protests to his itinerary, becoming one of the first prominent peace activists of the nuclear age.

He later taught at the University of St. Thomas, and often remarked that his students knew almost nothing about the history of dissent in America. A founding member of the Honeywell Project, Davidov was viewed by some as a subversive threat, but his supporters argue that he was one of the most important anti-war figures of the twentieth century.

If you believe the mainstream media, you might think that the Tea Party and the Occupy movement are polar opposites. The Tea Party are supposed to be rabid corporatists, while the Occupy movement is supposed to be vehemently opposed to any hint of corporate activity. Yet these media representations of the two movements are completely wrong. The two organisations are more similar than they are different.

Here’s an interesting blog post titled Open Letter From a Marine Tea Partier to All Occupiers. The post’s author points out that the two organisations have more in common than many people realise. So you have to wonder: who chooses to keep pushing the idea that they’re so different? Sure there’s the crazy side of all protest groups, but what about the original version of the Tea Party?

So why does the media persist in portraying these two organisations as opposites? Perhaps in some cases it’s because the alternative – a united group of citizens who share a desire to bring about real democratic change – is too terrifying. Don’t forget that behind most if not all mainstream media outlets is a large corporation that is quite happy with things as they are. Remember that old phrase: divide and conquer?

TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2011 is The Protester, that problematic individual who has brought down governments across North Africa and set up protest camps in the heart of America’s cities, but who has also rioted in the streets of London and hacked the website’s of some of the world’s biggest corporations.

TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2011 is The Protester, that problematic individual who has brought down governments across North Africa and set up protest camps in the heart of America’s cities, but who has also rioted in the streets of London and hacked the website’s of some of the world’s biggest corporations.

TIME’s definition of the protester is very safe and conservative. So there’s much talk of the protests of people in Tunisia and Libya, for example, but less talk about protesters who have represented a more dangerous trend in 2011. The likes of Anders Behring Breivik and Julian Assange could be seen as protesters too, in their own ways. Are they included in TIME’s celebration of the protester.

The term ‘protester’ has arguably been sullied in 2011 as governments seek to force protest groups to conform to rules about how they can stage their demonstrations. The idea of a ‘permit to protest’ might seem like ludicrous Orwellian double-speak, yet protest groups in many parts of the world have been allowed to operate only when they can be conveniently shunted into certain areas.

By naming The Protester as its Person of the Year for 2011, TIME comes dangerously close to legitimising disruptive forces within our society. But the magazine does not quite go through with such a move. For many, The Protestor is still the kind of person who toppled Muammar Gaddafi or who camps out in Zuccotti Park. The rest – the people who rioted in London and Birmingham, for example – are just hooligans looking for free stuff. Aren’t they?

Occupy Boston demonstrators have been removed from Dewey Square. A small number of people were arrested for trespassing and disorderly conduct, but police said that overall the demonstrators were ‘accommodating’ and complied with orders to leave the area.

As in many other US cities, Boston officials have in recent days set out to be much tougher with the Occupy demonstrators. Some critics allege that there is a concerted, possibly coordinated effort across the country to get the Occupy camps cleaned up before the end of the year. Boston’s mayor had previously said that there were no plans to forcibly move the protestors.

It’s unlikely that the Occupy Boston movement will simply pack up and go home after this setback, although it’s not currently clear where their new site might be. Around 150 protesters were living in the Boston camp, making Occupy Boston somewhat smaller than the likes of Occupy Wall Street and Occupy London. Occupy Boston has so far lasted around 10 weeks.

A group of musicians, including Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and members of Massive Attack and UNKLE appeared at a ‘thank you’ gig this week to support the Occupy London movement. The show was performed in front of an audience of around 100 people.

The musicians took to the stage at the Bank of Ideas, a space created by a consortium of protesters who have taken over an empty UBS building in the city. The future of the Bank of Ideas remains unclear, as the Swiss bank is believed to be attempting to get them forced out.

Musicians have been performing with the Occupy Wall Street group in New York for some time now, but this is the first time that a show has been put on in London. A CD is expected to be launched in the next few weeks, with profits going towards continuing the protest movement.

City of London police have reportedly issued a document to local business owners, listing the Occupy movement alongside such terrorist groups as al-Qaida and Farc. While the document stops short of explicitly labelling Occupy London as a terrorist group, there is nevertheless anger within the movement that they have been identified as such a serious threat.

What’s alarming about the document is the apparent police assumption that ‘anti-capitalist’ equates to ‘dangerous’. Apart from causing some minor inconvenience, Occupy London has caused no damage or harm to anyone, so the inclusion of the group on the ‘terrorism/extremism update’ – believed to have been sent to local corporations – is seen by some as a provocative move.

Police say that they have a duty to inform local businesses of any groups that might pose a threat, but campaigners argue that the document is an example of the force’s lack of perspective, and that it reinforces the ‘them vs us’ dynamic that some see as part of the developing UK political landscape. It also adds to the impression that dissent and protest are being gradually criminalised. News of the document’s circulation comes just a day after a report found that anger at police was a critical component of the London riots earlier this year.

The CabinCr3w group has ‘doxed’ the command staff of the LAPD, releasing personal details about scores of police officers in apparent retaliation for the PD’s approach to the Occupy LA protests. The group has also released lists of the salaries for city employees, which reveals some rather surprising details about how highly paid some city workers seem to be.

The ‘doxing’ is a collection of bizarrely detailed information. For some officers, you can find out all about their mortgages and email addresses, even the layouts of their houses. For others, there’s less information, but it’s still possible to see what organisations they are part of.

So far, it doesn’t look like there’s anything particularly surprising or shocking in the released documents. But it’s clear that the practice of releasing large quantitites of personal information about certain people who have angered hacking groups is a trend that isn’t likely to go away any time soon.

A man has been found dead in a tent at the Occupy Denton site at the University of North Texas. The man, named by the group as Darwin Cox, is said to have been given shelter by the protesters after he was seen suffering with a suspected fever.

The body was reportedly discovered late on Saturday afternoon at the small but growing Occupy Denton site. The area was sealed off and the body was removed a few hours later. Protesters are waiting to learn when they will be able to return.

Occupy Denton activists have highlighted the need to provide shelter for homeless people. A vigil to remember Darwin Cox is expected to be held on Monday evening near the Physics and Art buildings at the UNT campus.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI have allegedly been giving advice to various US cities about how to deal with the Occupy protests that have sprung up across the country in the past two months. The claims are another sign of official concern at the growing influence and media visibility of the Occupy protest movement.

The DHS and FBI have allegedly advised cities to show a massive police presence while focusing on legal technicalities such as zoning laws in an attempt to get move protesters on from various sites. Although the claims have not been confirmed, it is certainly noticeable that recent moves by city authorities in several parts of the US do seem to be similar to one another.

Despite the use of legal moves and increasing levels of police force, the Occupy movement shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, it seems to be growing and becoming a genuine cultural phenomenon. Will it actually change anything? The odds are stacked against true progress, but you should never count anything out entirely.

So you’re an international political movement and you need to raise some money. What to do? If you’re the Occupy movement, you prepare for the release of Occupy This Album, a star-studded benefit album that is expected to raise up to $1m for the cause.

The album is expected to feature the likes of Jackson Browne, Third Eye Blind, Crosby & Nash, Devo, Lucinda Williams, DJ Logic, Ladytron, Warren Haynes, Toots and the Maytals, Mike Limbaud, Aeroplane Pageant, and Yo La Tengo, as well as (somehow) Michael Moore.

Half the money raised by the album will go to the New York based Occupy movement, and the other half will go to movements around the world. It’s not clear yet where or when the album will be available, but if it’s in all the usual places, wouldn’t that kind of be missing the point?
