Toronto ‘Slut Walk’ organised to protest against cop’s comments on sexual assault

1,500 women took part in a hastily arranged ‘Slut Walk’ protest in Toronto on Sunday, following suggestions by a police officer that women can encourage sexual assault by the way they dress. Arguing that women have the right to dress pretty much however they want without being seen to signal their readiness for a little light raping, the protesters carried placards proclaiming themselves to be sluts of various shapes and sizes. It was a good-natured demonstration with no violence, but it carried an important message.

The idea that women somehow are responsible for ‘inviting’ assault because of the way they dress is as old as the hills. It’s also pretty wrong. Nevertheless, the police officer in question is alleged to have told a gathering that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized”. He probably meant well, but are we supposed to infer from that comment that there are men walking around who would never dream of assaulting a woman unless she was wearing something skimpy, in which case he would? There’s only ever one person to blame for sexual assault, and here’s a clue: it’s not the person being assaulted.
