WordPress.com comments opened up for Facebook and Twitter users

WordPress.com has made a small but significant change to its comments system, with users now able to leave comments using their Twitter or Facebook accounts. While users have long been able to authenticate their Disqus or Echo accounts using Twitter or Facebook, this new move means that you can use your Twitter or Facebook handle directly on blogs hosted at WordPress.com.

Facebook has been pushing in recent months to become the default commenting platform for the web, including non-Facebook sites. This has caused concern among some people, who feel that Facebook is becoming too common on websites. By allowing people to use Twitter or their old Disqus accounts, WordPress seems to be hoping that it can open up commenting to as many people as possible. Interestingly, there remains no way for people to comment using Google profiles.
