Yusuf Bey IV and Antoine Mackey convicted of killing Chauncey Bailey, first US journalist killed on home soil in 20 years

Two Californian men have been convicted of killing Chauncey Bailey, who in August 2007 became the first US journalist to die on home soil while investigating a story for nearly 20 years.

Yusuf Bey IV was found guilty of killing Bailey, who had been investigating financial difficulties involving Bey’s Your Black Muslim Bakery community group. Another man, Antoine Mackey, was also found guilty in relation to Bailey’s death and in relation to the death of Michael Wills.

Your Black Muslim Bakery was founded four decades ago by Bey’s father and became a leading symbol of community support in the Oakland area. But prosecutors claimed that the group was experiencing financial difficulty and that Bey was angry that Oakland Post editor Bailey was investigating the story.

It’s believed that the last time an American journalist was killed on home soil while investigating a case was 1992, when Cuban-American Manuel de Dios Unanue was shot dead in a New York restaurant. He had reportedly been investigating businessmen who were said to be involved in drug deals.
