India releases 108-year-old Hindu priest Brij Bihari Pandey from prison after 24 years

A man arrested in 1987 for allegedly being involved in a murder plot has finally been freed at the age of 108. Hindu priest Brij Bihari Pandey was not actually sentenced until 2009, because the case against him dragged on. During that time, he was held in prison. But now he’s a free man, at the age of 108.

Most people, given a life sentence when they’re 106 years old, would probably expect ‘life’ not to last too long anyway. But Brij Bihari Pandey has been released on medical grounds, apparently because prison staff were finding it too difficult to look after him.

Brij Bihari Pandey has reportedly thanked God for making sure he was released. It’s unclear what he’ll be doing with his life now, but he has 20 lost years to make up for and, one suspects, not a great deal of time in which to catch up.
