Obituary: actor Jerry Haynes, aka Mr Peppermint, has died aged 84

Jerry Haynes, the US actor best known for his role as popular kids’ TV character Mr Peppermint, has died aged 84. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

Haynes appeared as Mr Peppermint in more than 6,000 episodes of Mr Peppermint (1961 to 1969) and then Peppermint Place (1975 to 1996). Bizarrely, while recording a live show in 1963, Jerry Haynes inadvertantly became the first TV reporter to report the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on local news.

Aside from his role as Mr Peppermint, Jerry Haynes also appeared in many other TV shows, including Walker, Texas Ranger, Dallas and Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. His film appearances included the role of Dr. McNamara in Robocop (1987) and a number of Texas-themed TV movies.
