Yet another teenage girl has accidentally become an international star thanks to Twitter. This time it’s the turn of a 14-year-old Singapore girl named Adelyn Hosehbo (her online name), who hit the trending topics list by allegedly boasting on Facebook about slapping her mother.
Twitter has the power to transform even the most innocuous incidents into global events, which snowball once people start asking about the people involved. As we have seen in recent weeks with the likes of Amber Cole and April Pratt, Twitter can at times be a kind of online echo chamber.
It doesn’t matter what people are saying. They can be complimentary or abusive, they can be shocked or supportive. But if they’re discussing someone, they push that person up the list of trending topics and a kind of ‘Twitter perfect storm’ develops.
