A piece of art by Martin Kippenberger has been damaged after an over-zealous cleaner decided to clean off a layer of ‘grime’ that was in fact paint that was supposed to be there.
The artwok in question is Kippenberger’s When It Starts Dripping From the Ceiling (Wenn’s anfängt durch die Decke zu tropfen), which was on loan to a German museum when the cleaning occurred. The piece, worth approximately £690,000, was loaned by a private collector.
The cleaner reportely removed the patina from the four walls of a trough placed at the bottom of the artwork. Kippenberger, who died in 1997, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest modern artists.
