One of the world’s richest men is spending lavishly to lure big-name football stars to play for the lowly Dagestan team FC Anzhi Makhachkala. Suleiman Kerimov has already snapped up international stars such as Roberto Carlos and Samuel Eto’o, and is rumoured to be targeting other big names including Lionel Messi and Ashley Cole.
Suleiman Kerimov is worth more than £4bn and he is spending millions on his football project. Roberto Carlos is reportedly earning more than £19m per season, and Jose Mourinho has apparently been offered nearly £2m per month to manage the team. There’s no word as to whether Mourinho is interested in the offer.
FC Anzhi Makhachkala still have some way to go before they can challenge the really big names in world football. For example, they recently lost 5-3 to CSKA Moscow. And the volatile situation in Dagestan means that many of the club’s biggest stars live in Moscow and only visit Dagestan for games. Still, every team has to start somewhere.
