Up to 30 people have been injured in a huge 26-vehicle car crash on the M5 in Somerset. 26 vehicles, including half a dozen lorries, were involved in the accident, and police say that there have been an unspecified number of fatalities.
The accident happened at around 20:30 GMT. Thick fog in the area at the time is reported to have been a factor. At least four vehicles caught fire and some of the injured are said to have life-threatening or in some cases life-changing injuries. Unconfirmed reports suggest a petrol tank might have exploded at one point.
The precise sequence of events that caused the crash is not clear. Witnesses have described the scene as ‘carnage’ and motorists are being asked to avoid the area. An 18-mile stretch of the M5 is expected to be closed for at least 24 hours while the wreckage is examined and removed.
