November 5th: Is Anonymous going to ‘take down’ Facebook today?

For some time now, members of Anonymous have been promising to ‘take down’ Facebook on November 5th. The day is finally here, so will they carry through on their threat? And can they really take down one of the world’s most popular (and presumably resource-heavy) websites?

The nature of the Anonymous attack on Facebook isn’t clear, but will most likely be some form of DDOS attack. This is when a massive number of requests are send to the Facebook servers, with the aim of crashing or at least slowing the site. Given Facebook’s size, the DDOS needed to completely cripple the site would probably be one of the largest in history.

Anonymous has threatened to ‘destroy’ or ‘wipe off the internet’ numerous sites in the past. Usually this has resolved to a simple DDOS attack which takes the sites offline for a few hours. Some people expect the Facebook attack, if it happens, to be different somehow. Others believe the attack will ultimately not come to pass, just as a recent operation against Mexican drug gangs was called off.

  1. jesus christ, how many times do people have to say that this attack is not going to happen… anon has said over and over that they do not support the fb attacks.

if you knew anything about anon at all, you’d realise that 90% of members just like trolling. opfacebook is seriously the biggest troll ever.
