Death, Twitter

RIPSophie? Has Twitter user Sophie Sykes committed the first tweeted suicide?

Has Twitter just witnessed its first tweeted suicide? That’s the pretty awful possibility raised by the case of a user named Sophie Sykes, whose tweets this evening suggest she jumped from somewhere.

About five hours ago, Sykes tweeted “I’m right by the edge” and then “I’m gonna fall”. She hasn’t tweeted since. There doesn’t seem to have been any independent confirmation of her fate, and many people are – quite rightly – pretty suspicious aand sceptical (see comments section below). But reading her recent timeline, it’s pretty chilling.

Many people are already suggesting that Sykes killed herself because of bullying. The full story, if there is one, will likely take time to come out. Sykes seems to be a fan of band The Wanted. Some people seem to be convinced that the whole thing is a hoax. The creepy thing about Twitter is, there’s no way of telling for sure.

  1. I don’t know if this story is true but if it is it was bound to happen one day.

  2. Her second name isn’t actually Sykes. Loads of The Wanted fans call themselves that because, hello, Nathan Sykes is the singer in The Wanted. So don’t assume there’s only one ‘Sophie Sykes’.

She’s real enough to have uploaded pictures and have a YouTube channel.

  3. This is not the first time someone has tweeted about taking their own life. It’s happened twice before at least. Just google “twitter suicide notes”.

  4. if this isn’t true then whoever posted that message to twitter is a sick person, but if it is RIP Sophie 😦

  5. Don’t be daft – why is it a “creepy thing about Twitter”? That’s an absurd and nonsensical remark.

  6. At first, I was absolutely shocked, but as I read Sophie’s tweets I got kind of suspicious. And now I don’t know what to believe. I just know this; if this is fake, lots of people – including me – will be so pissed off.

  8. There is a band called sophie suicide and I believe the singer is sophie sykes. May want to follow up. I would hate this to be a hoax but not as much if its real.

  13. This is a load of bullshit.

It’s obviously fake. Anyone who believes it is a fucking idiot.

And anyone who is suicidal, does not write their suicide notes on twitter.

If this turns out to be true, then she’s better off dead for being an absolute idiot. If she’s getting bullied, then delete twitter.

Common sense has dropped to zilch thanks to social networking.

    • They don’t really look alike at all. The Sophie that supposedly committed suicide has blue eyes, whereas the one you just posted has brown eyes. Also, there is a big difference in facial shape.

    • Well.. stop saying then =[ .. reading the tweets of the girl @sophiemartintw will tell you that she is not the same one. What’s your mission, push another girl over the edge?

I really, REALLY hope that this is a hoax setup by some drama-queen. But i have the bad feeling that it is not a hoax and the girl has done it for real.

The only one who can check this girl out is twitter, they can trace the email and her IP

  15. Why will people be “so mad” if it is a hoax? If it is true, then that is sad, but if it is a hoax, my day will not be ruined.

  16. I doubt she did it, a lot of people fake their own death to get noticed, and it is a sick, twisted joke. I mean who tweets they’re about to fall off a cliff?

  17. To be honest there is a reason a person would do this whether it be real or not… To highlight the possiblilty of such a horrible thing happening, the effects of that shitting BULLYING that I cant stand!!! … or maybe just want attention!!! Everything happens for a reason and we cant control everything in our lives even sometimes ourselves…

  18. This definitely isn’t the first time this has happened. Sadly, I’ve seen it happen many times before.

  19. do you homework before publishing…
sykes is the name of the guy in the band she’s in love with.
there are 4 sophies using that surname on twitter.
people who actually want to die don’t post about it where others are bound to do all they can to stop them.
also, if she had wanted to die because of harrassement, she wouldn’t have erased all traces of harrassement on her page. and there’s none. she couldn’t on one hand have erased these traces because they embarrassed her and not erased all the “i’m going to do it” that is way more embarrassing.
this whole thing is non sense.
