Campus police at a North Carolina university have shot a former student who was allegedly carrying an AK-47 style rifle. Rashaad Gardner was shot at Elizabeth City State University at around 2:30am on Sunday morning.
Responding to reports of a man with a gun, campus police confronted Gardner and shot him in the leg. He then allegedly fled into a wooded area before police using sniffer dogs were able to locate him approximately an hour later.
It’s not clear what Rashaad Gardner was doing at the university, or why he allegedly had the weapon. He was taken to hospital after he was caught, but his injury is not thought to be life-threatening.
