Police investigating the weekend’s horrific M5 motorway pile-up, in which seven people died and many more were seriously injured, are reportedly investigating whether a nearby fireworks display could have been to blame.
Although weather conditions were already bad in the area around Taunton when the accident happened, there is speculation that a fireworks display could have caused a huge bank of thick smoke to drift across the motorway, further limiting visibility and causing the chain reaction that brought more than 40 vehicles together.
Police initially said that seven people had died but that there were fears that more bodies would be found. Thankfully they have confirmed that there are no more fatalities, although some of those hospitalised are believed to be still in danger. The names of the victims have not been released, and it’s believed not all the bodies have so far been identified.
