Ivian Sarcos, the reigning Miss Venezuela, has won this year’s Miss World title. She took the crown at the Miss World finals at London’s Earl’s Court, while demonstrators called for the event to be scrapped.
Miss World remains hugely popular around the world, with an estimated 1bn people likely to have watched at least part of tonight’s show. There was widespread jubilation in Venezuela as it was announced that Ivian Sarcos, their candidate, had been chosen as the overall winner.
While critics dismiss the event as old-fashioned and damaging to the perception of women in modern society, its supporters claim that all the women who take part are there by choice and that there is nothing wrong with beauty contests.
