Five alleged mafia bosses have gone on trial in Sicily, accused of kidnapping, torturing and killing a 7-year-old boy whose father was planning to testify against mafia members. Giuseppe Di Matteo died in 1996, but he is believed to have spent more than two years in captivity before he was finally killed.
Giuseppe Di Matteo was kidnapped in 1993. His father was considered a ‘pentito’ (a turncoat) for planning to testify against a number of key mafia figures. It’s alleged that the boy was kidnapped in order to show others what would happen if they decided to turn against the organisation.
It’s not clear exactly what happened to Giuseppe Di Matteo between 1993 and his death in 1996, but after he died his body was thrown into acid in an attempt to get rid of it. The trial has caused a media sensation in Sicily.
