A miner has died in an accident at a mine in Letcher County, eastern Kentucky. Jerry Britton is the third miner to die in the state in just 10 days, after two miners were killed in the west of the state in late October.
It’s believed that foreman Jerry Britton was struck by an item of equipment while working on Monday morning. The other two miners who died at the end of October were killed at a different mine when falling debris crushed their truck.
Seven miners have died in Kentucky so far in 2011, an unusually high number. Campaigners are calling for increased safety measures, but others argue that underground mining can never be 100% safe.
