The RAF has confirmed that a Red Arrows pilot was killed today in an incident on the ground at RAF Scampton. The name of the pilot is expected to be released shortly.
Details of the accident are so far a little vague. The pilot allegedly ejected from the plane while it was on the ground, with the parachute failing to deploy. There are unconfirmed claims that the canopy of the plane was badly damaged, with some sources allegedly speculating that the pilot might have been ejected through the canopy.
This is the second death of a Red Arrows pilot in 2011. A few months ago, Jon Egging was killed when his jet crashed after an air show near Bournemouth.
