Bil Keane, the man behind the Family Circus comic strip, has died aged 89. His comic had run for more than 50 years, and was considered a staple of American life.
Billy, Jeffy, Dolly, P.J. and their parents first appeared in February 1960, and soon grew to be featured in more than 1,500 newspapers across America. Often described as ‘heart-warming’, the strips are seen by some as overly whimsical and nostalgic, but millions still read them keenly.
In recent years, Bil Keane has been producing the strip with the help of his son Jeff, who inked the ideas and sketches drawn up by his father. It was recently announced that Fox and Walden Media have signed a deal to develop a film version of the popular series.
