156 alleged members of the English Defence League (EDL) have been arrested in Central London, with police claiming that they might have been planning to target Occupy London protesters camped outside St Paul’s Cathedral.
There were no reports of actual conflict between the groups. The arrests came at the end of a week in which there has been growing concern not only over the alleged use of intimidation by the police in advance of the student fees march, but also the government’s decision to ban the controversial Muslims Against Crusades group.
It’s not entirely clear whether there is any further threat to the Occupy London protesters, or why they were allegedly targeted. The EDL has so far made no comment on the allegations.
