Several people have been killed after a large explosion at a military base near the Iranian capital Tehran. The semi-official Fars news agency is reporting that the explosion occurred at a weapons depot run by the Revolutionary Guards to the west of the city.
It’s not clear what caused the explosion, which is believed to have completely destroyed the ammunition depot in the village of Bidganeh, near the city of Karaj. Windows were destroyed in nearby buildings and the blast was reportedly so powerful that it was heard 25 miles away in the centre of Tehran.
Iran has been fighting back this week following allegations that it is conducting tests to develop full nuclear weapons. The country’s government has dismissed the claims as false, and says that they are being used as pretext for a war that the US wants to launch against the country.
