Obituary: former cricket star Peter Roebuck dies aged 55

Former cricket star Peter Roebuck, who had more recently been working as a commentator, has died at the age of 55. He was found dead in a South African hotel room, where he was staying while covering Australia’s Test Series.

An opening batsman, Peter Roebuck led Somerset for most of the 80s, before finally retiring in 1991 and moving into a successful media career. Named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1988, his career statistics include an impressive 17,558 runs in 335 first class matches.

Local media in South Africa report that Roebuck allegedly committed suicide in his hotel room, although this has not been confirmed. His body was reportedly discovered at around 9am at the hotel in Claremont where he was staying.
