For the second time in 121 years, a copper sword has been stolen from atop Abraham Lincoln’s tomb in Springfield, Illinois. And while it’s possible that the theft was due to Lincoln’s fame, a more likely explanation could be that the copper is to be melted down and sold.
It was back in 1890 that Lincoln’s tomb was first robbed of its sword. The culprit was never identified, but a replacement sword was quickly put in place and lasted until thieves apparently entered the Oak Ridge Cemetery some time over the past week.
There was no other damage to the tomb. The sword was broken off at the handle, and plans are now underway to come up with a replacement, and possibly to beef up security at the site.
