Did Diaspora’s Ilya Zhitomirskiy commit suicide?

Rumours suggest that Diaspora co-founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy’s sudden death at the age of 21 (some sources suggest 22) might have allegedly been the result of suicide, but this is far from confirmed, with no official cause of death having been revealed so far.

Ilya Zhitomirskiy’s death was met with widespread shock at the weekend after the news was revealed. Although Diaspora has been somewhat quiet of late, while dealing with a Paypal problem, the ‘anti-Facebook’ is continuing to grow, and Zhitomirskiy and his co-founders had become the public face of the project.

Diaspora continues to be developed and Ilya Zhitomirskiy’s death is unlikely to prevent the site from being launched as planned. But the death will undoubtedly be a blow, particularly coming so soon after another key figure, Yosem Companys, announced he was leaving the project for personal reasons.
