Herman Cain‘s wife Gloria has come out strongly in defence of her husband, telling interviewers that she doesn’t believe the allegations made against him by various women. Speaking to Fox News, for example, Gloria Cain said that the allegations don’t fit with her experience of Cain as a man who respects women.
Gloria Cain has kept something of a low profile during her husband’s political career so far, but she is now becoming more visible. The couple have been married for 43 years, and that kind of marital stability is an asset to Cain’s campaign – and one that stands in contrast to some of his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination.
Herman Cain has been fighting allegations of past sexual misadventures for more than a week now, but his poll numbers don’t seem to have entirely slipped. He is more or less maintaining his position alongside or slightly ahead of Mitt Romney, with the allegations against him seeming to be losing traction in the media. Unless any new allegations emerge, Cain might just have weathered the storm.
The concern for Republicans, though, might be that if Cain does win their party’s presidential nomination – which is still an outside bet – then the allegations might resurface and be picked apart again by the media. As ever, the question of whether or not such allegations are true is only one part of the problem, because the media’s handling of such stories can play a big role in defining a candidate, regardless of the provenance of the allegations.
