Google X secret projects lab includes space elevator and more

Google apparently has a secret projects lab that works on ‘blue sky’ ideas including a space elevator, internet-enabled refrigerators and the infamous self-driving car. The projects in Google X are unlikely to see the light of day any time soon.

The existence of the Google X lab was revealed by the New York Times, which claims that robotics engineers are working on a variety of projects at two locations, one of which is in California. It’s not clear how long Google X has been working, or whether any former Google X projects have ever been released.

The space elevator idea sounds particularly interesting, since it would allow items to be winched up into orbit. It’s also remarkably reminiscent of the space bridge used by the Transformers to transport energon cubes to Cybertron in the 80s cartoon. So it’s logical to assume that Google is also working on actual Transformers.
