The UK is reportedly keeping every option on the table as it works to secure the 2012 Olympics from possible terrorist threats. One option being discussed is said to be the use of surface-to-air missiles.
Since 1996, missiles have been part of the standard Olympic safety system. Nevertheless, open discussion of their possible use indicates the degree to which the UK is expected to ramp up security to unprecedented levels. The Olympics are widely considered to be a key terrorist target.
UK officials recently sought to dismiss reports that the US is planning to send up to 1,000 of its own security agents to Britain to protect its athletes. According to UK sources, there is no knowledge of such a plan.
