Anger as 18 kindergarten children killed in bus crash in Gansu province, China

At least 18 kindgarten children have been killed in a bus crash in Gansu province, China. The school bus, which officials say may have been overloaded, collided head-first with a truck in a rural part of the province. Two adults – the minibus driver and a teacher – were also killed in the accident on Wednesday morning.

Although the bus had only nine seats, it apparently contained 62 children when the accident happened. News of the deaths has once again raised concerns in China about chronic underfunding of education, particularly in poorer rural areas.

As well as the 18 children and two adults who died, 44 others are in hospital, some of them in a critical condition. There are unconfirmed reports that the minivan was allegedly on the wrong side of the road when the accident happened. Two people from the truck are believed to not be seriously hurt.
