Obituary: Karl Slover, one of the last surviving Munchkins, has died aged 93

Karl Slover, one of the last surviving original Munchkins from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, has died at the age of 93. He suffered cardiopulmonary arrest on Tuesday, but as recently as early November he had appeared at various public events.

There were 124 Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz but by now only three remain. Four have died since 2007, when they collectively received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the film, Slover plays the first Munchkin trumpeter to herald the Munchkin King, a role he took when the original trumpeter apparently got stage fright.

Karl Slover was born Karl Kosiczky in the Czech Republic. Just over 4ft tall, he was the only member of his family to suffer such shortness. Although he retired fairly young, he was still active and was always happy to talk about his time in Hollywood.
