An Indiana hunter has been killed by a deer he had just shot. Paul Smith was taking part in a Chain O’Lakes State Park near Fort Wayne when he was reportedly injured by a deer he had shot and believed was dead. He was later found unconscious by park workers.
An autopsy revealed that Smith died from a lacerated liver, which in turn caused substantial bruising. Although Smith suffered no lacerations, the deer is believed to have kicked him with such force that he died within a few hours.
Smith had reportedly shot the deer from a tree stand and is said to have been attempting to field dress the carcass when he discovered it was alive. He was able to kill it, but apparently not before it had aimed a fatal kick at him.
