House minority leader Nancy Pelosi has turned down the offer of a debate with Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry. Speaking to reporters, Pelosi listed her prior commitments for Monday, the date Perry had apparently proposed.
Pelosi is something of a hate figure for many Republicans and by casting himself as her enemy, Perry might pick up a few extra votes. Beyond that, however, it’s questionable as to whether the move adds any real sense of gravitas to Perry’s public image.
Nevertheless, it’s interesting to note that candidates are trying to break out of the monotony of the interminable Republican debates, which are mounting up and which are becoming decreasingly visible in the media landscape. Expect more unusual debate challenges in the next few weeks.
