US police have uncovered a 360m long drugs tunnel running from Tijuana in Mexico to Otay Mesa in California. The tunnel, which features wooden supports and electric lighting and ventilation systems, appears to be fairly sophisticated.
More than 30 such tunnels have been discovered so far this year. Relatively quick and easy to construct, they can be used to smuggle people and drugs into the US. With the latest discovery, police uncovered 14 tonnes of marijuana that is believed to have been heading into the American market.
It’s not clear how the tunnel was discovered, but US officials are said to be increasingly frustrated by the ability of smugglers to circumvent sophisticated security systems with relatively basic methods such as tunnels and, in one notable case, a catapult.
