eBay is opening a pop-up shop in London’s West End, just in time for the Christmas rush. But the shop will feature no cash registers, with customers instead using their smartphones to make purchases.
The shop follows a successful project in New York, and is designed to showcase new smartphone-based payment methods. Customers will use their phones to pay for items via eBay’s online payment system, and there will be no need for carrier bags since items will then be delivered to customers’ doors.
The shop will open on December 1st and will stock 200 of the website’s most popular items. Plans are for the store to last just five days before it shuts again. The move comes as other online retailers try similar experiments. Amazon, for example, recently started testing collection lockers in London, allowing customers to avoid missed deliveries.
