Egyptian blogger Aliaa Magda Elmahdy causes controversy with naked photos

A prominent Egyptian blogger has caused controversy by posting naked photos of herself in the run-up to the country’s parliamentary elections. Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, 20, posted the photos in which she is wearing only red shoes and stockings, as a ‘scream’ against the hypocrisy and sexism of Egyptian society.

Conservative groups have predictably slammed Aliaa Magda Elmahdy’s photos, but some secular groups have also accused her of playing into conservatives’ hands by making it easier for them to claim that liberalism would be damaging to Egyptians’ cultural values.

Aliaa Magda Elmahdy’s blog has reportedly already received thousands of threatening comments, but it has also raised questions about whether Egypt’s revolution has really changed anything about the way the country treats women. The photos have already been seen more than 2m times, but some are warning that Elmahdy’s life could be in danger as a result.
