There’s a growing row over police tactics used against protesters at UC Davis earlier in the week, with one assistant professor allegedly writing an open letter calling on Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi to resign.
The anger has been fuelled by an incident on Friday in which 10 protesters were arrested and about a dozen were pepper-sprayed. The pepper-spraying was caught on video. The students who were sprayed were sitting on the ground at the time, but police have defended their actions by saying that they felt threatened.
While she has not responded specifically to the calls for her to resign, Katehi has announced the formation of a taskforce to look into the incident. She also reiterated her support for the principle of free speech, and expressed her sadness regarding the events that unfolded.
