A list of banned words, nominally released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to help tackle SMS spam, has caused amusement in the country by issuing a list of 1,500 words that mobile phone companies are expected to ban.
A wide range of words and phrases have been banned following publication of the list, including ‘Jesus Christ’, Gonorrehea (sic) and ‘monkey crotch’. Any messages containing the banned words are to be blocked from being delivered.
Whether the banned list will work is unclear, but for some Pakistan citizens the list is already extremely memorable. Via sites like Twitter, people have been discussing the words with great enthusiasm.
