The remains of scores of whales have been found in a ‘whale graveyard’ in the Chilean desert, raising the question of how – 2m years ago – so many whales came to die in the same place at (possibly) the same time.
There are plenty of theories. One suggests that the whales were trapped in the area when a landslide cut off their escape route. Another suggests that a huge wave could have washed the whales ashore. Another proposes that the whole thing is just a coincidence. It’s unlikely that any of the theories can ever be proven one way or the other.
More than 75 whales have been discovered at the site so far. Although large groups of dead whales have been found like this before, the Chilean discovery is the first with so many whales all being found at once.
