Is Newt Gingrich really a good bet for the Republican 2012 presidential nomination? The prospect of Gingrich vs Obama might have seemed unlikely just a month ago, but a recent Quinnipiac University poll puts Gingrich ahead of all his rivals.
The poll has Gingrich on 26%, considerably up from a similar poll conducted earlier this month in which he scored only 10%. Mitt Romney was second, with Herman Cain third and Ron Paul tied with Rick Perry for fourth. The others were all in the 2-4% range.
Gingrich is probably the most ‘old school’ Republican in the race, but for a party that seems very unsure about the candidates on offer, that might actually be an advantage. One thing’s for sure: in this unpredictable race, you’d be a fool to write anyone off, with the possible exception of Rick Santorum.
