America’s oldest soldier Don Nicholas plans to stay in the army past his 60th birthday

Staff Sgt Don Nicholas is one of many US soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan. But he’s the only one who’s approaching his 60th birthday, and he says he does’t plan to stop any time soon.

Nicholas saw action as far back as the Vietnam War, and re-enlisted after the 9/11 attacks. A former Marine rifleman, he is now in the regular US army and in recent years he has undertaken two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.

Although army rules state that he must retire when he reaches 60, Nicholas is apparently hoping that his background as a podiatrist could allow him to join the medical branch. If that happens, Don Nicholas could easily fit in another tour of Afghanistan before he eventually retires for good.
