FBI denies cyber-intrusion attack on Illinois water pump

Last week, it was widely reported that a cyber-intrusion attack had allegedly destroyed a pump at a water utility SCADA facility. But now the FBI, having investigated, is reportedly claiming that no such intrusion occurred.

The original report of an attack led to a great deal of speculation as to who would attack a water pump and why. Many people assumed that the incident was a test, designed to see if real damage could be caused to hardware in such a way.

It seems now, however, that early reports – which included claims of possible Russian involvement – were incorrect. The actual cause of any damage is not known, but for now at least online attackers are not believed to have been responsible.
