#RIPRyan? Another teen reported to have committed suicide due to online bullying

Another teen is reported to have committed suicide due to online bullying. The #RIPRyan hashtag has been trending in the UK this morning, but despite many expressions of sorrow over the incident, there seem to be few details about who ‘Ryan’ was or what exactly happened.

Online bullying is a huge problem. While social networks allow people to provide support to others and to highlight bullying as a problem, in some cases more harm than good is caused. Barely a week passes without reports that someone had committed suicide due to bullying.

There’s also a growing trend for people to fake suicides online, either to get attention or simply as an act of trolling. The problem is that there’s often very little information about a person’s death, allowing rumour and misinformation to spread rapidly.
