Iranian authorities claim to have captured 12 CIA agents who they say were planning to launch attacks on the country’s nuclear facilities. Tehran also claims that the CIA agents were working with Israeli agents in the country.
There has been no official response from the US, and the claims are impossible to verify. But the story would seem to tie in with recent (again, unverified) claims that more than a dozen CIA spies had been captured in Iran and Lebanon. In that case, the spies were allegedly paid informants. Iran is now claiming to have ‘CIA agents’.
It’s certainly the case that the US and other countries are concerned about Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iranian authorities say that their nuclear program is designed for energy generation only, but there remain concerns about the possible ‘weaponisation’ of the country’s systems. Iran recently confirmed that its nuclear sites had been hit by the Duqu worm, which aimed to damage equipment.
