A prominent Egyptian-American journalist has claimed that she was attacked by Egyptian police near Tahrir Square. Mona Eltahawy says she was beaten and sexually assaulted by 5 or 6 members of the security forces.
Eltahawy’s claims have not been confirmed, and Egyptian security sources have made no comment. But there have been numerous reports of attacks of foreigners and women in the region around Tahrir Square over the past week as violence in Egypt grows.
The case will undoubtedly remind many of the ordeal suffered by CBS reporter Lara Logan, who was sexually assaulted in the Tahrir Square area at the start of the year. There have been numerous claims from others that widespread sexual assaults are happening every day in Cairo under cover of the current demonstrations.
