Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has gangrene in his fingers and will have to have them amputated, according to a surgeon who has examined him. It’s not clear when the surgery will be carried out.
Gangrene occurs when a considerable mass of body tissue loses blood supply and dies. It is potentially fatal and the usual approach is to immediately remove the affected areas. Gangrene is usually caused by injury, though it hasn’t been confirmed whether Gaddafi has any injuries that might have caused the condition.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi is to be tried in Libya after the country’s government reached an agreement with the International Criminal Court (ICC). There had previously been calls from the international community for him to be taken to the Hague in the Netherlands, but Libya resisted such a move.
