Trinidad’s prime minister says that a plot to assassinate her and several members of her government has been foiled. Kamla Persad-Bissessar told gathered journalists that criminal gangs were behind the plot.
Few details of the plot have been released, but around a dozen people have reportedly been arrested. The government has kept Trinidad in a state of emergency for a number of months in an effort to deal with the growing problems caused by gangs.
The state of emergency is up for review and there is a bitter debate in Trinidad about whether it’s time to relax the rules, which are credited with helping reduce the country’s high homicide rate.
