Iranian parliament votes to downgrade diplomatic relations with the UK

The Iranian parliament has voted to downgrade diplomatic relations with the UK. The vote, which passed with a large majority, came after the UK moved to put sanctions on Iranian banks.

Some MPs reportedly chanted ‘Death to Britain’ during the vote, as 87% of MPs agreed with the resolution. If Iran’s Guardian Council approves the legislation, which is likely, the result could be that Britain’s ambassador to Tehran, Dominick Chilcott, will return to the UK.

There is growing concern in the west about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and it was recently announced that the UK would be cutting off relations with Iranian banks due to fears that they could be used to fund the country’s nuclear program.
