2012 Presidential Campaign, Newt Gingrich

Manchester Union Leader set to give key endorsement to Newt Gingrich

The much-coveted endorsement of New Hampshire newspaper The Manchester Union Leader is expected to go to Newt Gingrich this week, despite initial reports that it would be given to rival Mitt Romney.

The endorsement is significant not only because it cements Gingrich’s status as the leading Not-Romney candidate, but also because it gives him a real chance to beat Romney in the New Hampshire primary. That vote is considered a ‘must win’ for Romney, and defeat would seriously damage his campaign.

Romney currently has a commanding lead in the polls in New Hampshire, but the endorsement from The Manchester Union Leader would undoubtedly go a long way towards swinging things towards Gingrich. Those within the Republican party who crave a Not-Romney candidate might get their wish after all.
