Obituary: musician Ross MacManus dies aged 84

Ross MacManus, the musician best known for singing I’m A Secret Lemonade Drinker in a 70s TV advert for R. White’s lemonade, has died at the age of 84. He was also known for being the father of singer Elvis Costello.

The R. White’s advert first aired in 1973 and was so popular, it continued to air for nearly a decade. MacManus sang the famous song, which was dubbed over images of an actor sneaking downstairs at night. The singer’s son Declan (aka Elvis Costello) provided backing vocals for the advert.

Apart from the advert, Ross MacManus had a long career in music. He appeared on some of his son’s albums, sang with the Joe Loss Orchestra, and recorded some of his own work, including an album of Elvis Presley covers.
