Svetlana Peters, Josef Stalin’s only daughter, has died in the US at the age of 85. She had been suffering from colon cancer and reportedly died at her home in Richland County, South Carolina.
Born Svetlana Stalina, she initially adopted her mother’s surname following the death of her father in 1953. Fourteen years later, with the help of the CIA, she defected from Soviet Russia and started a new life in the United States. The defection caused a minor diplomatic row between the two countries.
Having denounced communism, Svetlana Peters sought to live a quiet life in hew new home country. She eventually wrote two books about her experiences, and in 1984 she briefly returned to the Soviet Union to be reunited with her two children, but by the following year she had returned to the US.
